Black Eyed Susans Tavern & Restaurant

A recent pizza trip to Black-Eyed Susans on Long Beach Island was nothing short of amazing. This pizza guy was thrilled to find the pizza perfectly cooked with no flop—a key requirement for me. The sauce was excellent, providing a robust and flavorful base. The cheese, while a bit overpowering due to the extra parmesan added, is a classic touch for Black-Eyed Susans. It may be strong for some, but it's a signature element that sets their pizza apart. The undercarriage was perfectly cooked without any charring, and the crust was simply to die for—crisp yet tender in all the right ways. Black-Eyed Susans is undoubtedly one of the best places, if not the best place, for pizza on Long Beach Island. It's definitely worth the trip for any pizza lover.

In an 18 mile island where scallops are plentiful, good pizza is not. This is the single anomaly. From the decor in this spot to the impactful sweet punch of marinara in the traditional pizza, this is your best pizza spot on lbi- not close. The burrata pesto was a special and aside from the oil frenzy was delicious.

Beautiful pie with great taste driven by the prominent and flavorful sauce. Thin crust wavered from excellent crunch on the edges to soggy floppy center, relegating this pie to a sub 8 rating.

Pizza is good. I got the hot honey chicken pie and was impressed but two pizzas cost $51 and were TINY and for that reason I give it a 6/10. I will take my biz elsewhere

Pizza is an 8 based almost on sauce alone. Cheese is absolutely creamy and super fresh and sauce and is super fresh and full of flavor. Cheese and sauce ratio is pretty amazing at all. They do not skimp on the delicious sauce at all. Dough is very tasty but not crispy at all. Wish it was and this pie would’ve been even that much better. Did have it for take out and not right there so maybe that played into in sot being crisp. Either way, great pie, if it were crispier it would’ve been on a whole other level.

We arrived 5 minutes earlier than expected and the pizza was a little cold. The sauce really makes this pizza good! It is above average.

Fancier than a bar pie, a little bigger than a personal pizza and thinner than Neapolitan style, this belongs in a special category called “Tavern” pie. The dough is thin like a bar pie, very solid crisp all around with an almost perfectly crispy crust. The sauce is terrific, loaded with magnificent zest and plenty of zip. The fresh basil brings out the tremendous tang of the tomatoes. The cheese is outstandingly creamy, very fresh mozzarella, so fresh that it actually drips moisture, not oil or grease. This all comes together to make a very tasty pie. Black Eyed Susan’s is a rather versatile restaurant, with their pizza game as kind of a “side hustle;” but this is truly one of the best pies you’ll find on LBI, with incredibly fresh ingredients all cooked to perfection. If you’re a fan of good pizza and on the island, definitely try this “Tavern” style pie; you will not be disappointed.
