Pizza Review
Ok... I was really looking forward to this review because I have been to the original location in Staten Island my whole life.... (wait for that review)... now I know that once I step over state lines things tend to change so I was hoping for the best. Deninos didn’t disappoint. Although not as amazing as the original it’s still had all of the elements that make up arguably the greatest pizza place in New York. First off, as you know it’s all about the sauce. Without a good sauce you ain’t got a good pizza. Deninos always hits the mark.. although I can taste a slight difference between the New York sauce and the Jersey sauce it’s still nice and hearty with a great tang.. Cheese is a very good quality and is distributed well throughout the slice. The next and biggest obstacle when crossing over state lines is the dough... again, although it’s a little different it still has the core elements. Nice crunch, nice char, a fair amount of crispness and not Doughy.... with that being said I’ll definitely be back... it’s an 8.9.... bonus review.....I am not big on the specialty slices but I grabbed a buffalo slice just because there was not any more MOR slices available... it was pretty good. And probably one of the best buffalo slices I’ve tasted. If you like that kind of thing.
Pizza Review
The original Denino’s Tavern opened in 1937 on Staten Island. In 1951, Carlo Denino took over for his father John after he passed away and began serving pizza at the tavern. Carlo’s son Michael opened this Aberdeen, NJ location in 2007 and Denino’s has been franchising ever since, expanding into Manhattan and several central & south Jersey locations. I found the Manahawkin, NJ location to be better than the original Denino’s and I can say the same for this joint. The Denino’s on Staten Island was very good, but the pizza was too dry, with sauce scantly spread. This pie is loaded with sauce, almost a bit too much. Exceptionally sweet-sauced and overflowing, I usually prefer more sauce than not enough; but this is a lot. Luckily, the cheese is unbelievably good; flavorful, melty, oozy, delectably delicious with terrific taste & texture. Normally I don’t value the cheese as much as the sauce & dough but the quality of this mozzarella blend salvages the over-abundance of heavy sauce. The dough is thin, fairly crispy, tremendously tasty with a dry & firmish undercarriage, providing and excellent base for the other ingredients to go along with an exquisitely crispy & crunchy crust. The sauce might be too plentiful and sweet for some; maybe a little Parmesan or oregano would help neutralize the sweetness but I don’t mind it at all. Overall, this is a fantastic alternative if you can’t get to the original Denino’s on Staten Island; in fact, you might even find that this location has the better pizza. 🤷🏻‍♂️
