Ordered 1/2 pepperoni and 1/2 cheese… nice and thin with a good undercarriage. Can’t believe we were able to walk in and grab a seat with no wait 👍👍

Something went wrong here. Took over an hour in a less than crowded restaurant to get us a medium sausage Apizza. Dryest crust and dark dark mootz, not good. I think they left it in the oven way too long and just decided to dump it on our table anyway. With the best in the country around the corner Ernie’s is off the list.

Went there this afternoon and was blown away. Sally’s is my “gold standard” and when I saw this pizza I thought it was going to flop like crazy but it was nice and crispy. It was also not “heavy” either. Also, yes I should have taken a picture before I got to the last slice…

Not a bad slice at all, I have nothing bad to say about this place. The pizza is cooked well I wish the sauce packed more of a punch but overall this is a decent pizza.

More flop than I expect from New Haven pizza but the flavor is on point. Crust is great.

Killer pie at a real deal old school family joint. The owner since 1971 still makes the pie by hand every order! The cheese flavor is incredible and smooth. Great crisp crust. This would be higher if the cheese was less heavy or if there was more sauce and sauce flavor. Slight flop on this well done pie. Loved this place.

My first Ernie’s experience and I was pleasantly surprised. Beautiful crisp and the plain cheese was delicious right up there with Zup’s and Roseland. Sausage half was good to but not on the above level. Will absolutely be back.

While they haven’t been around quite as long as the other legendary New Haven pizzerias, Ernie’s has been in business since 1971; so they have 50 years of pizza-making experience and it shows. This pie was strikingly similar to Modern Apizza in both style and taste. Surprisingly, the cheese is the star of this pizza, which is very rare for a non-Neapolitan pie. Amazingly melty, oozing, lava-like flow with a uniquely delicious flavor; the mozzarella is so fresh that it creates a little puddle of moisture in the center of the pie with virtually no oily grease. The cheese is on the thick side, which causes the sauce to get a little lost, but the creamy, rich, smokey flavor carries the entire pizza. I can’t tell if it’s the moisture of the cheese or the crushed tomatoes in the sauce that makes the pie a little watery, but it’s just about the only factor keeping this pizza out of the 9s. The sauce could use a little thickening and more oomph, as the cheese dominates the flavor. The dough is thin, very tasty with a firm base and light crisp. The crust is terrifically crispy and crunchy, bringing perfect balance to the pie in texture and taste. Overall, this is right up there with the great pizza New Haven has to offer. Right on the cusp of being in the conversation for best pizza in the area, it just falls slightly short but is still well worth traveling for and trying.

While driving back to Philly, I decided to stop at Ernie’s for a slice after Dave’s 7.8. Really friendly service. Great crust, a little too cheesy for me and I prefer a little more sauce. The owner definitely appreciated the service and everything Dave has done for his business. For that I gave it a 6.8 and some love and kindness. ❤️

excellent. coal fired look out of a regular oven. missing more of that fiery new haven char. no flop, tasty sauce. RIP: roof of my mouth.
