Gio's is a hidden gem in Metairie! This comfortable family-owned Italian spot probably doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Before I even walked in, I was hit by a wall of heavenly aroma, and immediately I was reminded just how hungry I was. Despite only being here a few times, the man in charge recognized me from last time, and asked how I'd been. Super nice both times. Looking back into the kitchen, I could see two big pots simmering on their stove next to their pizza oven, which together with the friendly family atmosphere really brought home a genuine, homemade Italian kitchen feel. I would happily take a date here.
The pizza itself is sharp. Everything is right about it. No flop (not that it matters), fresh-tasting ingredients, excellently charred, crunchy complex crust, not too greasy, and tons of flavor that my mouth is still trying to get to the bottom of. I'm giving it an 8.4, which ties with my other favorite local pizza, Mark Twain's, and really it just depends on my mood which I'd prefer on any given day.
The only catch is you gotta catch them when they're open. Many times I've wanted to eat here, only to find they're closed that day, or I caught them between their lunch & dinner hours. But it's certainly forgivable. They're a small family-owned place, and have their own obligations and family to tend to. Just make sure you check the hours first!
