Established in 1946, this old school, cash only pizzeria has been family owned for over 75 years and they have a very loyal following. Perhaps a little too loyal of a following with 11 scores of 9.8 or higher, including 9 perfect 10s on the OneBite App, artificially inflating the overall rating. Putting these shenanigans aside, this is a thin crust, pan pizza, like a large version of a bar pie. The dough is very thin, super soft & floppy, needs some crisping. The crust has medium crisp and not very flavorful. The sauce is way too bitter, lacking any sweetness whatsoever, with a touch of tang, and it’s spread rather scantly. The cheese is greasy, somewhat tight but a little meltier than a standard bar pie. Clearly, the secret ingredient in this pizza is oregano…just way too much, overpowering the other ingredients as the prevailing flavor. The taste & texture of this pie is on par with Mama Celeste frozen pizza, which is fine when you have nothing else to eat in the house, but not the type of fresh pie I’m seeking from the outside pizza world. I like sauce-driven pizza with good crisp, this just doesn’t cut the mustard for me. It wasn’t terrible but this isn’t anywhere near the quality of the legit famous Joe’s Pizza on Carmine Street in NYC.
