I traveled straight through the gates of hell to find a pristine cathedral for my evening prayer. Johns of Times Square is located right in the anus of Manhattan. I walked in to find the biggest pizza spot I have ever seen. Stained glasses windows adorned the walls and there was a massive stained glass dome on the ceiling. Felt close to home. I came to discover (by reading the back of the menu) that this location was originally a church. Blessed be the Lord. There was 4 brick pizza ovens in this space and tons of pizziolos cranking out pies. Sat right down on the second floor and ordered a cheese pie. When it came out it looked a lot like Johns of Bleeker St. But Johns of Bleeker is great pizza, this was just good. As for the Holy Trinity. The cheese on this pie was fantastic, not too salty and the perfect ratio. The sauce was good, but a little sweet to the taste and lacking some minerality. The crust had an ideal crunch and texture, but lacked flavor. It wasn’t tasteless by any means. I tore into the crust and uncovered a strong scent of yeast- it just lacked what you would get in a 9+ slice. Overall great, but I avoid Times Square like the plague so I probably won’t return. 8.1
