Pizza Review
The new kids on the block, bringing an old school approach to pizza with a bit of new school style, Killer Pies is looking to become the premier slice shop in downtown Asbury. Their “cheese pizza” is actually called a “Killer Pie,” which is a traditional round pizza with sauce and cheese along with some shaved Pecorino and fresh basil to gussy up the pie and make it look fancier than it is. Truthfully, it’s a very sharp-looking pie, superb aesthetics, looks incredibly tasty and crispy. Sadly, looks can be deceiving. The dough is thinnish, light, airy and shockingly sponge-like, lacking crisp. The taste and texture of the dough is on par with typical Jersey Shore boardwalk/beach pizza. The shredded mozzarella and shaved pecorino romana cheese blend is quality, with a nice sharp flavor that highlights the pie. The sauce is a little too salty, not very sweet, no real kick, could definitely use some spice, disappointingly generic-tasting. I expected a lot more flavor packed into the sauce to compliment the delectable cheese blend. Overall, this is a very sexy looking pie, but unfortunately lacks any real substance. You can’t always judge a pizza by its looks, good or bad. There’s plenty of room for improvement starting with adding some spice to the sauce and crisping up the dough to give this pizza some crunch. Plenty of potential here.
