Knowing of Luigi's before his review, I have to be honest, I thought Portnoy's 9.3 was way high when I heard it.
Maybe I'm too harsh. But I just don't see where you justify how this slice is 2.0 points (or so) higher than the many quintessential New York slice joints you can find. I start them out at a 7, and plus or minus points from there. Add a 0.5 to all scores if you think I'm harsh.
Really the main difference here is in the parmigiana adds a sharpness to the flavor and there's some oregano, though I couldn't detect much on mine.
My slice I got at 11:40AM. Not long after opening. I think it's great that he charges only $2.50 a slice and not much mor the for speciality slices: I got a regular slice, a square margherita, and should've gotten a round margherita.
Crust was light, thin, but not airier than what's typical. Cooked medium well, browned but not charred.
Sauce and cheese get near the end crust. That gets a couple small points from me. Like typical NY style, the cheese dominates. Sauce is smooth and pasty not chunky. Not really a distinct flavor though.
Cheese is good thouh, low moisture mozzerella, grated parmigiana adds a sharpness, and there's not too much of it.
I guarantee I would've liked the round pie margherita better, though I did have the square margherita and can imagine how it tastes on the regular slice crust, which I like better.
That square is a 7.6. This is a 7.4. I can imagine the round margherita is near an 8 for me. It'd be better fresh. But let's get back down to Earth on this one.
