Like most places in Maryland that sell “New York style” pizza, it’s close, but no cigar. There is something about a slice from the five boroughs that just doesn’t seem to make it to Maryland.
The sauce was rich, with some good tang, the amount of mozzarella was appropriate. The crust was a bit greasy (it was a reheat) and there was a little flop, which doesn’t bother me. The overall taste was good for Maryland, but the flavor and texture of a NY slice just wasn’t apparent.
I used to eat at the original Maggi’s in Wheaton, MD, which was probably the best in the area. This pizzeria is owned and operated by the grandson of the owner of the original. I think he’s actually improved on his grandfather’s recipe.
