The best pizza I had in New Haven. Big fan of the amount and taste of the cheese, great sauce flavor as well. Perfect amount of char.

Phenomenal. Perfect crust and flop, tasty sauce for a robust 9.1

Must have been an off day. Very floppy underdone middle, cheese coming off in first bite. Taste was on point, however. Will have to try again

Best pizza I’ve ever had. Good crisp/char in the crust. Good flop. Cheese and sauce very flavorful.

Really great pizza, definitely my style. Sauce and cheese has a really good flavor and the crust almost has a croissant like texture which I love. Went here and to Sally’s while I was in the area and I have to say Modern is my place in New Haven.

8.3. This slice wasn’t saucy enough. But guaranteed if I go back it’s a much higher score. More sauce and it’s an All Timer

Around since 1934, the name “Modern” is kind of ironic for this old school pizza joint. Considered 1 of New Haven’s “Big 3” pizzerias, Modern doesn’t seem to get the same publicity as the Pepe’s/Sally’s rivalry. While they advertise their pies as thin crust, I find this to be more of a regular thickish round pie. The oil-fueled brick oven heats at a temperature that creates the perfect crisp for the crust, which may also be the best crust I’ve ever had…light, airy, crispy with true pizza flavor. The dough is clearly thicker than thin crust with a surprisingly soft undercarriage and decent flop. The dusting of bread crumbs underneath prevent too much moisture from building to avoid sogginess. The cheese was much thicker than I anticipated and could have been melted a tad more thoroughly, but it was deliciously creamy nonetheless. A little light on the sauce but it still has plenty of zip & tang, delectably tasty despite its sparseness. Serious pizza connoisseurs call this “real pizza.” It’s beautifully basic, a true throwback pie…on par if not even better than Pepe’s and definitely a top pizza destination in Connecticut worth making a pilgrimage to New Haven, one of the pizza capitals of the country.

First to Modern as a CT native. Incredible. Has its own flare and taste even compared to the likes of a Pepes. Undercarriage could have been a bit crispier. But hard to top this pie.

We got 5 pies. Cheese, pepperoni, veggie, meat lovers & fried eggplant. All amazing & the fried eggplant was a big hit with the family. We came all the way from Dallas, TX to visit my husband’s hometown. He grew up in New Haven & said this was the best place & he wasn’t just being bias. It’s the best pizza I’ve ever had hands down. Crust is incredible!
