Pizza Review
Much to my surprise, this pizzeria is a franchise spawned from the original Patsy’s of Harlem that was established in 1933. Franchise “chains” like this are popping up all of the country, similar to the way Grimaldi’s branched out from their original Brooklyn location. This is actually a restaurant in The Shops at Nanuet Mall, essentially making it the P.F. Chang’s or Cheesecake Factory of pizza. Also, if you go to the original Patsy’s Pizzeria website, under “locations,” they only list the joints on 2nd Ave & 74th Street in NYC, despite numerous franchises carrying the Patsy’s brand name. Nevertheless, I ordered this pie very last minute as this spot was closing for the night. They were nice enough to make me one last pie and said it would be ready in less than 10 minutes. As much as I appreciated that, this pizza couldn’t have spent more than 5 minutes in the oven; just enough time to mostly melt the cheese but the dough wasn’t even close to being cooked thoroughly. The pie was limp, lifeless, flaccid and floppier than the Easter Bunny’s ears…just a sloppy, soggy, droopy & drippy mess of a pizza. Void of any crisp whatsoever, the dough was supremely soft and unappetizingly undercooked. On the bright side, the cheese is a creamy blend of mozzarella, a little thickish, rather tasty with no excess oil abound; melted just enough but not oozy, as parts of the cheese were slightly colder in some spots. The sauce is very sweet and plenty prevalent, but also in need of serious spicing; with no zip or zing, it tastes more like an imitation of Patsy’s original sauce. Trying not to judge on an undercooked rush job, to be fair, I heated a slice in the oven to crisp the pizza myself; while much better than the initial mush I sampled, this is still not remotely close to O.G. Patsy’s of Harlem. Had I not picked this pie up right before closing, this undercooked abomination would score somewhere in the 2s. All things considered, a 6.5 is a more than fair score. However, much like the Grimaldi’s franchise pizzas, this poor substitute knockoff pie should be avoided and disregarded as nothing more than faux Patsy’s pizza.
