After trying the regular cheese pizza at the Slice Shop, I figured I’d rate one of the specialty pies at the original Paulie Gee’s. All the pies have cheesy puns (pun intended) such as a Brian DeParma, Sake Mountain Way and one of the most popular pies: the Hellboy, pictured above. All of these pies are basically Neapolitan style and slightly larger than personal size. Despite a nice-looking char, I couldn’t believe how soft and chewy the dough was, particularly the crust. The only remotely crispy aspect of this pie was the generously spread soppressata, which is truly delicious mixed among the fresh mozzarella, also fantastic, just wish there was more of it. The sauce is sparse as well and not really anything to write home about. Nothing about the pie is really all that spicy unless you drizzle some Mike’s Hot Honey on top. I’m not the biggest fan of adding honey to pizza, so this really isn’t something I’d eat regularly but it had a nice taste and was worth trying once. It definitely packs a lot of heat, so have a giant bottle of water standing by! Much like the Slice Shop, this joint is also overrated. Long lines, long waits and annoying hours (opens at 6pm most nights). If you don’t mind any of that, make the trip and enjoy some pretty good, but not great pizza.
