Pizza Review
Family owned & operated, Pizza & Panini has been serving Toms River & surrounding Jersey Shore communities for over 20 years. This is a traditional, tremendously thick, ultra heavy & doughy South Jersey football pizza. Not firm whatsoever, the weight of the cheese & sauce causes significant floppiness in the super soft dough. The crust has moderate char & slight crisp but doesn’t pack much crunch as the texture is pillowy soft. Unappealingly thick & unreasonably heavy, the cheese is a massive amount of shredded whole milk mozzarella engulfing the entire surface of the pie & dominating the other components. Uncontrollably weighty & stringy, this feels more like an extra cheese pizza than regular plain cheese pie. The mozz isn’t terrible, just unbearably excessive, thicker than the dough, which is a major turnoff for me. Shockingly, the sauce is surprisingly spectacular; distinctively sweet, zesty & zingy with a terrifically tangy taste that compliments the dough beautifully and almost matches the volume of the cheese. The sensational sauce actually carries the other hefty attributes of this pizza. All in all, this is pretty tasty South Jersey/Jersey Shore football pizza held back by disappointingly soft texture & swallowed by the abundance of cheese. Crisp & firm up the dough and dial back the amount of mozzarella substantially and this pie could sail into the upper 7s on the wings of the sublime sauce. With those improvements, the door is wide open for a higher rating.
