Founded by 3 brothers: Joe, Mike & Frank Rocco after they graduated from Fordham University, opening up their first pizzeria in 1991 in White Plains, NY. They have since opened 8 other Planet Pizza locations throughout Connecticut, including this spot in Stamford. Despite the multiple franchises, they claim they are not like Domino’s or any other “fast food corporate Italian joint.” However, this is essentially chain quality pizza, Connecticut’s version of Little Caesar’s. There are some brutal ratings on the OneBite App across all of the Planet Pizza locations; but this pie is not as abysmal as these scores suggest. Nevertheless, this is regular, traditional, circular dime-a-dozen football pizza, as basic as it gets. The dough is made from flour milled from Kansas spring wheat in a Hobart mixer, plain-tasting but surprisingly firm, with no flop, possessing shockingly decent crisp, particularly in the crust which actually has more of a stale reheated texture than true oven fresh crunch. Aside from the faux crisp, the dough is generic-tasting, not terribly bland but clearly subpar. The cheese is much better than expected, consisting of 100% whole milk Wisconsin mozzarella aged 28 days minimum, providing a pleasant taste & moderately creamy consistency. The sauce is made from California tomatoes, exuding mild sweetness but terribly weakened by the excess oil, creating a mostly salty flavor to go along with an unpleasant acidic aspect, as well as lacking volume & significant seasoning. This pie requires some garlic powder, grated Parmesan or crushed red pepper to assist the meager natural flavors. More or less this is late-night drunk pizza, also the kind you would serve to children at a party who don’t know any better. Fine for a quick grab-n-go slice if you need a pizza fix but overall, this is substandard, below average, chain footballl pizza on par with New York City dollar slice shops.
