Sal's Downtown

This fuckin’ app got me eating shitty fuckin’ pizza just to do a review! ™️ Again man, it’s Florida. I don’t expect much here but the sign said NY style pizzeria and with a name like Sal’s I had to try it. Staff is top notch. Pizza is sold by the slice but generally only during times when they have a flow of customers. They took care of me since no one was here so as far as customer service goes, this place is a 10. Supposedly the building was once a drug store in the ‘40’s and the late great Pat Summerall worked here then. As far as the pizza goes: 4.4 tops; and that’s only because of it’s fresh ingredients. Handmade and cooked to order right in front of you. Pizza oven is legit. I could literally see the pizzas bubbling inside the oven when they would open the door but the expectations I had just weren’t met. Crust: Serious flop. Slice is cut NY style and is very thin but never achieves any type of crisp. None. The edge was slight crispy which was good but the base maintained a doughy texture; cooked but almost like it’s missing baking powder or something. Minimal flavor to it. Sauce: Not much here. Very basic. Wasn’t impressed. Cheese: Hands down the best ingredient. Extremely fresh blend of authentic Italian cheeses. Very flavorful and almost no grease to it. All in all it’s edible but needs work. Has serious potential and with a few minor tweaks this could turn out to be a major find in northern Florida.
