Pizza Review
Founded in 1960, Sun Ray Pizza has been around for a sneaky long time. I was hoping for a more thin crust pizza but I forgot you had to specifically order “barstool style;” I also forgot they’re more known for their squares, so maybe I’m not rating their best effort. I got a regular round pie; very thick and unsurprisingly heavy, it’s definitely a higher quality football pizza, borderline circular Sicilian pie. The dough is rather well-done, solidly firm with a somewhat crispy undercarriage but a shockingly atypical spongelike texture you’d find on Greek style pizza. However, this dough is much more tasty and not nearly as spongy as standard Greek pie. The crust is incredibly crispy with a buttery golden char and superb crunch, an underrated component of the pie. The cheese is oozy, gooey and lava-like with a molten texture, charred nicely in some spots, thick & heavy, a terrifically tasty blend of shredded mozzarella. The only issue is the amount of grease buried within. There is a significant quantity of oil drippage with each bite, not overtly visible, but seeping out of the cheese when you hold the slice vertically. While the excess grease doesn’t affect the flavor of the pizza too much, it definitely adds to the weight of an already heavy pie. Undeniably, the sauce is a superstar; sensationally sweet and scintillatingly savory, bursting with saccharine tomato flavor, as if it was supercharged with sugarcane. With tremendous tang & bang, punch & pizzazz, the uniquely delicious sauce dazzles. While it may be too sweet for some, the zesty sauce carries the ingredients and really separates this pie from standard football pizzas. This is really close to travel-worthy pizza; but the thick & slightly spongy Greek-like dough combined with heavy grease flow, hold the pie back just a bit. Even though I enjoyed the sauce, it might be a smidge too sweet for others, overpowering the remaining aspects of the pizza. I wouldn’t be surprised if their thinner round pie or even their squares push the overall rating into the 8s; but as it stands, this is incredibly tasty pizza, definitely worth a try if you’re in a half hour radius.
