With a fairly loyal following in Irvington, NY, Tony’s serves up pretty standard, traditional, basic football pizza. Decently crispy & firm with plenty of crunch in the crust & virtually no flop, it has surprisingly terrific texture for a rather generic football pizza. Unfortunately, the taste doesn’t match the outstanding texture because the flavor is M.I.A. The bland & tasteless dough is essentially a crunchy version of cardboard. This pie lacks substance, distinctiveness & personality in just about every aspect aside from the consistency of the crust. A boringly basic blend of shredded mozzarella, the cheese is also void of much flavor other than a smidge of saltiness, likely emanating from the mostly manageable volume of grease. Neither sweet nor savory, the sauce tastes like a puréed blend of unseasoned tomatoes. Other than a dash of oregano in a few spots, the flavor of the sauce completely ghosts the marvelous texture. I highly recommend pouring on some garlic powder, grated Parmesan or crushed red pepper to help bring this astoundingly flavorless pizza back to life. Despite the reasonably crispy & crunchy consistency, particularly in the crust, this is a puzzlingly disappointing pie when it comes to the taste. The quality texture saves the overall score from sub-5 territory; but the astonishing lack of taste keeps this pizza from even sniffing the 7s. Without some major flavor enhancements, this pie isn’t worth the waste of calories.
