Pizza Review
Established way back in 1937, Uncle Joe’s has been serving generation to generation for over 87 years, offering Greek style pan pies, thin home style pizza & their featured “Billy’s spicy pie.” While I’m not a fan of Greek style pizza to begin with, that is exactly what you get when you order a large plain cheese pizza here. Essentially overcooked, the pie is extremely well done with a dark & blackened crust that maintains a stale texture & taste. Despite the extra oven time, the rest of the dough is soft, lacking crisp, with that signature spongy standard Greek undercarriage texture. The taste & consistency of the dough is akin to just about every subpar Greek pizza I’ve ever had. Also overdone & hardened, the cheese is tight & rigid, void of creaminess, unappealingly plastered atop the pie in standard Greek pizza fashion. Unsurprisingly, the sauce tastes like universal Greek pizza sauce with an acidic tang & zest, a little zing & zip, but definitely more savory than sweet. The flavor from the sauce isn’t bad but it’s not my favorite. Also, I will never understand why they insist on cutting circular pizzas into square slices; either cut into triangles or make a rectangular pie. I would also appreciate if these pizzerias would hang a Greek flag outside or in the window to indicate their style of pizza. While I respect an establishment that has been in business for almost 90 years, Greek pizza’s inferior taste & texture just isn’t my style. This seems like a really nice family restaurant with a cool little bar and maybe their thin crust or spicy pies are better; but I can’t recommend coming here for their below-basic Greek style pan pizza.
