Took a trip out to the Mon Valley to try the originator of the Mon Valley Red Top pizza. This place has been in the 12 Best Pizza Places in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette the last couples years, specifically for this red top. I have been wanting to try this place for awhile, but it has tough hours and is cash only so I had to time it up just right. The vibes inside the pizza shop were amazing. I was talking with the owners about the history of pizza in the valley. He used to work at Armando’s in Charleroi which is one of my favorite places all time. So it was really cool to hear how it was back in the day. I got two pizzas here. The red top which the Post Gazette raved about was indeed the favorite. That’s what most customers get here anyway. The sauce was extremely good and not chunky at all. It had some garlic vibes to it as well as strong tomato flavor. I would dip the pizza in the sauce that would fall off the top, which was especially good with the end crust. The cheese provided great texture, and had the perfect amount of it to counteract the pile of sauce on top. This wasn’t the best pizza I ever had, but I completely understand how it landed in the newspaper. Donora is an hour away from the city of Pittsburgh, but yet it was good enough to land on Pittsburgh’s best pizza list. So impressive to think about. Check this place out! I shouldn’t be the only one to have reviewed this place.
