With no website & not much buzz, Sir John’s is an old school restaurant & full-bar lounge that also serves rather unique style pizza. Appearing to be a combination of a large bar pie & a football style pizza with the thicker crust, I thought this pie would be right up my alley. The cheese looks very similar to a bar pie with a tight, rigid & cratered “Coffeecake Face” texture. The overall flavor of the pizza, particularly the sauce, gives off Greek pie vibes. However, the dough is nothing like the typically spongy & square standard Greek pizza dough. Despite being mostly soft, the undercarriage is firm, somewhat crunchy & crackery with decent char in some spots. Doughy & seemingly undercooked, the crust has a disappointingly bland taste & homemade texture that has minimal crunch & lacks crisp. While I didn’t love the sauce right away, it definitely grew on me, with a savory Greek pizza sauce flavor consisting of oregano, a hint of sweetness & a touch too much saltiness derived from the heavy pockets of oil. This pie is a true grease gusher, dripping down each slice, soaking my hand in oil with each bite. Unfortunately, the glut of grease impedes the flavor of the sauce just enough & infiltrates the taste of the cheese as well. Despite some shortcomings, this actually isn’t terrible pizza overall. The somewhat strange combination of football pizza, bar pie & Greek pizza flavor makes for a uniquely interesting pie that’s kind of difficult to score. The weird crossovers of taste & texture create polarizing preferences while the excess oil, bland crust & various inconsistencies leave plenty of room for improvement. I think this pizza has the potential to score in the 7s but as it stands, the flaws are too hindering. If you’re looking for a really different kind of pie, this is worth a try; but not if you have to travel long distances.
